Actor Robin Sachs dies at 62

Played Giles nemesis Ethan Rayne on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'

Robin Sachs, who played Ethan Rayne, onetime friend of Rupert Giles and later nemesis of Giles and the Scooby gang on TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” died suddenly of undisclosed causes on Feb. 1. He was 62.

News of his death was first reported on his website, and no further details were provided.

Sachs’ appearances on “Buffy” beginning with the 1997 episode “Halloween” led to further work in the sci-fi genre, including repeated appearances on “Babylon 5,” a guest gig on “Star Trek: Voyager” and roles in the genre spoof “Galaxy Quest” (he played the villain Sarris) and in “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.”

Sachs appeared on a 2005 episode of “Alias” and more recently guested on “Torchwood” in 2011 and on “Castle” and “NCIS” in 2012.

In the early 2000s Sachs began doing voicework for videogames, racking up credits on “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds,” “Resident Evil: Outbreak — File #2,” “Rainbow Six: Lockdown,” “Dragon Age: Origins,” “Mass Effect 2″ and “Mass Effect 3” and “Dragon Age: Origins — Awakening,” “Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days”

Born in London, Robin David Sachs was the son of actors Leonard Sachs and Eleanor Summerfield.

He began his career in the early 1970s, appearing in the 1972 horror film “Vampire Circus” and British television productions including “Henry VIII and His Six Wives” and “Upstairs, Downstairs.” He was the star of the 1977 BBC series “Rob Roy” and had a small role in “Brideshead Revisited” in 1981. Sachs co-starred with Terence Stamp in a series of TV thriller pics in 1986.

Sachs made his first appearances on American television in 1991 with “Dynasty: The Reunion Movie” and a guest gig on “Jake and the Fatman.” He later guested on “Murder, She Wrote” and “Walker Texas, Ranger,” among other shows.

He also tackled Shakespeare onstage with touring roles in “Hamlet” and “Twelfth Night” in London’s West End.

Sachs was born Robin David Sachs in London to actors Leonard Sachs and Eleanor Summerfield.

Survivors include his wife, Casey DeFranco, whom he married in 1991; a brother; a niece; and three stepchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 9, in Santa Monica.
