Doja Cats Scarlet Misses Top Three Debut as Rod Wave Secures Second Week Atop Albums

Although Doja Cat‘s “Paint The Town Red,” the lead single off her latest LP “Scarlet,” leads the Hot 100 for a second week thanks to its command on radio (53 million impressions in the last week, per Billboard), the parent record failed to debut in the top three of the albums chart.

“Scarlet” debuts at No. 4 with the equivalent of 72,000 albums sold in the United States, a fairly underwhelming turnout considering there weren’t any no other comparable, major releases on the updated list. Many anticipated the record would have a fair chance at a higher slot, considering Doja landed prime time during the MTV Video Music Awards and performed for “The Victoria’s Secret World Tour,” but others were quick to point to her album’s rickety rollout: the singer was heavily criticized in the months leading up to “Scarlet’s” release after she downplayed her previous records and took jabs at her fans in since-deleted posts.

Doja has not yet landed a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, though her previous LP “Planet Her” debuted at No. 2 in 2021 with an impressive 109,000 units sold. The set was blocked from reaching the summit by Tyler, the Creator’s blockbuster “Call Me If You Get Lost.”

The only other new album to have hit the top 10 of the albums chart is the five-song “Boys of Faith” from Zach Bryan at No. 8. After scoring a No. 1 debut with his self-titled release, which currently claims the No. 5 slot on the list, “Boys of Faith” enters with 43,500 album units sold and 50 million audio and video streams.

Florida-born trap-soul rapper Rod Wave is at No. 1 for a second week following the chart-topping debut of his fifth studio LP “Nostalgia.” He earned 88,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 28, with a majority of that total coming from the 124 million streams of the set’s 18 songs.

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” trails closely behind with 87,500 units earned, and Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time” returns to the top 3 at No. 3 with 73,000 units. SZA’s “SOS” is at No. 6 and Travis Scott’s “Utopia” is at No. 7 as Peso Pluma’s “Génesis” rounds out the top 10 at No. 9 alongside Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” at No. 10.

The singles chart remains mostly unchanged from last week: SZA’s “Snooze” is now at No. 2 for a new Hot 100 peak, with 73 million impressions in airplay; Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” is at No. 3; Swift’s “Cruel Summer” is at No. 4; and Zach Bryan’s “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, keeps its No. 5 position.

Wallen’s “Last Night” is at No. 6 after spending 16 weeks at No. 1, the most ever for a non-collaboration; Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” is at No. 7; and Gunna’s “Fukumean” lifts just one slot up to No. 8. Last, but certainly not least, Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” re-enters the top 10 at No. 9 and Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” is No. 10.
