Sure breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed your baby, but it doesn’t always come easily to a lot of mums. That's where nipple shields come in.
A rough start doesn’t mean nursing won’t ever work for you, nor does persevering mean that it will, but a helping hand for both you and baby to get into the groove of things won’t hurt either way. A lot of new mamas swear by nipple shields for breastfeeding as they can help to get you through those first few tricky weeks (and beyond).
A poor latch can happen for a variety of reasons; little one might be having trouble because of the shape or size of your nipples, some tongue-tied and premature babies find it difficult to suckle, and other babies simply experience difficulties for reasons that aren’t always clear. Nipple shields might help with those struggles, though, so they’re worth looking into.

A nipple shield for breastfeeding is a silicone nipple-like product that you place over your own in order to help your baby latch and feed. There are holes in the top to allow milk to flow through and they’re soft and flexible, so they won’t irritate your skin, and should stay in place while you breastfeed.
Does a nipple shield help with pain?
If your nipples are cracked or sore from breastfeeding (or trying to), which is very common in the early stages of motherhood, a nipple shield can help you to recover and prevent symptoms from getting worse. Think of them as your Fairy Godmother when it comes to getting your baby to latch - as life-saving as your maternity knickers and nursing bra.

Nipple shields for breastfeeding are meant for short-term usage postpartum and it’s recommended that you stop using them once your baby is able to latch on themselves and breastfeed effectively. This may take several days or several weeks, everyone and every baby is different - it doesn’t make you or them a failure.
